Prof. Rafał Milanowski is a Professor and Head of the Institute of Evolutionary Biology at the University of Warsaw. His research focuses on the genetics and genomics of protists, molecular evolution, and molecular phylogeny. Current projects include studying nonconventional introns in euglenids and their evolutionary implications. Recent work emphasizes DNA barcoding methods for taxonomic resolution of euglenids and the analysis of circular DNA structures. He leads a research group investigating mitochondrial genome diversity, stress responses in Euglena, and phylogenetic relationships within Euglenida. Key contributions include taxonomic revisions of morphologically similar species and methodological advancements in DNA isolation and metabarcoding. His work bridges classical taxonomy with molecular techniques, addressing gaps in understanding euglenid biodiversity and evolution.
Research projects include:
- Characteristics of nonconventional introns in nuclear genes of euglenids (Nowe Idee 2B, IDUB)
- Evolution of introns in nuclear genes of euglenids (NCN OPUS 2015/19/B/NZ8/00166)
- Characteristics of nonconventional introns in nuclear genes of euglenids (NCN OPUS 2016/21/B/NZ2/01759)
Publications highlight innovations in circular DNA analysis, taxonomic protocols, and genomic methodologies. Collaborations involve international teams in molecular biology and phycology. His research contributes to foundational understanding of protist biology and evolutionary mechanisms.
