Rae Stevenson is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Community, Youth, and Education Studies at Clark University, Worcester, MA. Her work integrates participatory action research (YPAR), arts-based methodologies, and youth empowerment to challenge systemic inequities. She holds a Ph.D. in Social Work (City, Culture, and Community program) from Tulane University (2023) and a B.A. in Social Science from Portland State University (2018).
Her research focuses on creating justice-centered spaces where youth critique oppressive systems and reimagine futures through storytelling, graphic novels, and collaborative research. Notable projects include the 2021 New Orleans YPAR Academy and collaborations with Tulane’s Center for Youth Equity. Her dissertation produced a graphic novel anthology exploring Black youth experiences in New Orleans schools.
Publications span topics like racial trauma in academia, anti-Blackness in social work, and school dress code policies. Her creative works include children’s literature and indie comics addressing grief and social justice.
Rae’s advising and collaborative initiatives emphasize relational accountability and youth-led change. She co-leads youth-driven research projects and advocates for anti-racist pedagogies in education systems. Her work bridges academic scholarship with grassroots community action, prioritizing marginalized youth voices in policy and practice.
