Racquel Gates is an Associate Professor in the Department of Film and Media Studies at Columbia University's School of the Arts. She holds a PhD from Northwestern University's Screen Cultures program, an MA in Humanities from the University of Chicago, and a BS in Foreign Service from Georgetown University. Her research interrogates intersections of blackness and popular culture, particularly focusing on discourses of taste and quality in media representations.
Gates' work bridges academic scholarship and public engagement through contributions to outlets like The New York Times, Film Quarterly, and The Los Angeles Review of Books. She was honored as an Academy Film Scholar (2020), supporting her book project on Hollywood style and blackness. Notable projects include curating the Museum of the Moving Image's exhibition on Black women in film posters and serving as a consultant for Criterion Collection's Melvin Van Peebles box set.
Her research emphasizes how 'disreputable' cultural representations can critically engage with racial identity, as explored in her book *Double Negative: The Black Image and Popular Culture* (2018). She actively participates in podcasts, television programs, and public lectures to democratize film analysis, advocating for rigorous yet accessible cultural critique.
