Miriam Petty is an Associate Professor in the Department of Radio/Television/Film at Northwestern University's School of Communication and serves as Associate Dean for Academic Programs at The Graduate School. She is affiliated with Performance Studies, African American Studies, and Gender and Sexuality Studies.
- Research Focus: Examines race, stardom, and cultural reception in Hollywood film, with a specialization in African American representation. Her first book, Stealing the Show, analyzes black audiences and performers in classical Hollywood cinema.
- Current Work: Developing a manuscript on Tyler Perry's media productions and African American audiences' nostalgic engagement with cultural traditions.
Academic Recognition:

- Galbut Outstanding Faculty Mentor (2017)
- Charles Deering McCormick Professor of Teaching Excellence (2018-2021)
She contributes to public scholarship through film series and retrospectives, and was appointed to the National Film Preservation Board in 2021.
