Gaylyn Studlar is Professor of Film and Media Studies and David May Distinguished Professor in the Humanities at Washington University in St. Louis. She joined WashU in 2009 after holding positions at the University of Michigan (where she directed the Program in Film and Media Studies) and Emory University.
Her research explores feminist film theory, Hollywood history, stardom, Orientalism, and masochistic aesthetics. Notable books include Precocious Charms: Stars Performing Girlhood in Classical Hollywood Cinema (2013) and Have Gun Will Travel (2015). Current projects focus on erotic labor in pre-Code Hollywood and Clara Bow's stardom. Her work has been translated into seven languages.
Teaching includes Film Theory, Women & Film, Film Noir, British Cinema, and Film Historiography.
