Rachele Antonini is an Associate Professor in the Department of Interpretation and Translation at the University of Bologna, where she has been teaching since 2015. Her academic career began with research fellowships at the University of Bologna from 2001 to 2005, followed by a position as Researcher in English Language and Translation from 2006. She obtained her National Scientific Qualification as Associate Professor in 2014.
Her educational background includes a Degree in Interpretation from the Advanced School of Modern Languages for Interpreters and Translators (SSLMIT) of the University of Bologna (1999) and a PhD in sociolinguistics with a thesis on "Language Attitudes in Old and New Gaeltacht Areas" (2012).
Professor Antonini's research focuses on sociolinguistics, humor studies, audiovisual translation, and non-professional translation and interpreting, with particular emphasis on the sociolinguistics of Irish Gaelic and linguistic and cultural mediation by children and adolescents. Her current research explores the role of children and adolescents as language brokers in multicultural settings.
Her recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on child language brokering, educational materials for cultural diversity, and non-professional translation. The predominant themes across her recent work include cultural mediation, educational approaches to language diversity, ethical considerations in non-professional interpreting, and the development of resources for teachers working with linguistically diverse classrooms.

Professor Antonini serves as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Non-professional Interpreting and Translation and is a member of the Scientific Committee of the Italian Journal of Humor Studies (RISU). She has coordinated significant research projects including the Horizon 2020 NEW ABC project (2021-2024) and the Horizon Europe ALPHABETICA project (2025-2028), both focused on educational approaches to cultural diversity and inclusion.
She currently teaches English Language and Culture for the Bachelor's Degree in Intercultural Linguistic Mediation and Multimedia Translation between English and Italian for the Master's Degree in Specialized Translation at the University of Bologna. Her institutional roles include Research Delegate for the Department of Interpretation and Translation (2024-present) and membership in the University Thematic Group for Social Sciences and Humanities.
