Rachel Starkings is a Research Fellow at the Sussex Health Outcomes Research and Education in Cancer (SHORE-C) group within Brighton and Sussex Medical School at the University of Sussex. She joined SHORE-C in 2015 after working as a Senior Trial Coordinator at The Royal Marsden Hospital for both the Head, Neck and Thyroid group as well as the Renal and Melanoma firm, where she managed numerous academic and commercial clinical trials.
Her research interests focus on psychosocial oncology, with particular emphasis on quality of life for patients and informal caregivers, psychological wellbeing, communication training for healthcare professionals, and end of life care. Rachel has extensive experience with both quantitative and qualitative research methods and has been involved in measure development for assessing quality of life in cancer patients.
Rachel's recent publication record shows a strong focus on metastatic breast cancer patient experiences, communication about genetic testing, quality of life assessment, and intervention development. Her work often involves collaborative research across multiple institutions, including the University of Sussex, University of Brighton, and The Royal Marsden Hospital.

Rachel provides teaching at the University of Brighton on stress concepts and their application in cancer settings. Her research has been supported by the National Institute for Health Research, particularly through the REDUCe2 study grant running from 2022-2027. She maintains an active research profile with numerous publications in high-impact journals including British Journal of Cancer, Psycho-Oncology, and Supportive Care in Cancer.
