Dr. Helena Harder is a Principal Research Fellow at Sussex Health Outcomes Research and Education in Cancer (SHORE-C) within the Brighton and Sussex Medical School at the University of Sussex. Based in Room 6 at the BSMS Science Park Road location in Falmer, Brighton, she has been with SHORE-C since November 2010, establishing herself as a key researcher in psychosocial oncology.
Dr. Harder holds a PhD from Erasmus University Medical Center Rotterdam (2007), an MSc in Psychology from Utrecht University (1995), and a BSc from Windesheim University of Applied Sciences (1987). She is clinically qualified and registered as a Clinical Psychologist with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) since 2011. Her international experience includes working at Patan Academy of Health Sciences in Nepal (2006-2009) and within the Dutch healthcare system prior to moving to the UK.
Her research focuses on understanding and measuring patient-reported outcomes and patients' experiences of cancer care and treatment, with particular expertise in cognitive effects of cancer treatment, health-related quality of life, supportive cancer care, and the use of mobile health applications in cancer recovery. Dr. Harder has secured multiple research grants from prestigious funders including the National Institute for Health Research and Breast Cancer Campaign.
Analysis of Dr. Harder's publication record reveals a consistent focus on improving cancer care through patient-centered research. Her recent work (2021-2025) shows particular emphasis on decision support for older women with breast cancer, digital health interventions, and understanding patient experiences with cancer treatments.
