Dr. Rachel Rich is a Reader in Modern European History at Leeds Beckett University's School of Humanities and Social Sciences, affiliated with the Centre for Culture and Humanities. She earned her BA from McGill University and MA/PhD from the University of Essex, having previously taught at the University of Manchester and Aberystwyth University before joining Leeds Beckett in 2010.
Her research examines the cultural history of modern Europe with specializations in:
- The history of food consumption and dining practices
- Gender identities and women's domestic roles
- National cuisines and cultural exchange
- Royal households in Georgian England
- Class structures and bourgeois consumption patterns
Her publications consistently explore themes of food as cultural signifier, gender dynamics in domestic spaces, and the formation of national identity through culinary practices. Recent work analyzes historical connections between European foodways and contemporary political identities.

She leads the British Academy-funded project 'European Cuisine and British Identity in the Age of Nationalism (1760-1837)', collaborating with researchers from University College London, University of Birmingham, and University of Essex. The project produces both academic monographs and public-facing digital resources on royal dining practices.
As Co-Editor of Food and History and member of IEHCA's scientific council, she maintains extensive international research networks in food studies. Her teaching includes courses on modern European emergence, food history, and applied humanities.
