Rachel Povey is an Associate Professor in Health Psychology and Co-Director of the Professional Doctorate in Health Psychology at Staffordshire University. She holds Chartered Psychologist status and is registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). Her academic journey includes a PhD from the University of Leeds on dietary change determinants, followed by roles at Manchester Diabetes Centre and Staffordshire University. She has led the Professional Doctorate in Health Psychology since 2004.
Her research focuses on psychological interventions for dietary behavior change, diabetes management, and barriers to healthcare engagement. Notable areas include childhood obesity interventions, diabetes prevention program participation, and stigma reduction in diabetes care. She has published extensively on topics such as family-based weight management, stop-smoking practitioner challenges, and palliative care body image struggles.
Dr. Povey’s teaching includes supervising trainees on the Professional Doctorate and delivering courses on health psychology skills. She has received the Fellow of the Higher Education Academy award, highlighting her contributions to teaching excellence. Her work bridges clinical practice and academic research, emphasizing patient-centered approaches and multidisciplinary collaboration.
Recent publications explore pandemic impacts on child wellbeing, social work burnout interventions, and diabetes remission guidelines. She actively contributes to national health policy discussions, particularly on decision-making frameworks for disabled youth and diabetes stigma mitigation strategies.
