Rachel Payne is the Deputy Head for Education and Student Experience at the School of Education, Humanities and Languages, Oxford Brookes University. She specializes in visual methods, arts-based pedagogy, and art education policy. Her research explores transformative artist-teacher pedagogies, museum-based learning, and the impact of policy on educators. She leads the MA in Education: Artist Teacher Practice, collaborating with institutions like the Pitt Rivers Museum.
Rachel’s work includes developing academic poster workshops for students and staff, supporting the University’s GetPublished! Conference. She chairs national initiatives like the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Art, Craft and Design Education and serves as NSEAD President. Her awards include the 2015 Brookes Union Teaching Award for Most Effective Feedback and multiple nominations for team excellence.
Her research spans art education advocacy, STEAM integration, and the marginalization of creative disciplines. Notable projects include quasi-experimental studies on museum education and co-designing a consent education program. Rachel’s contributions bridge theory, practice, and policy to enhance arts in education.
