Professor Rachel Paine Caufield is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Political Science at Drake University. She also serves as Co-Executive Director of the Ron and Jane Olson Institute for Public Democracy, promoting democratic practices and civic engagement. She holds a Ph.D. from The George Washington University and a B.A. from Hood College.
Her research focuses on American politics, judicial institutions, and electoral systems, with a notable expertise in Iowa’s caucuses. She has authored *The Iowa Caucus* (2016) and led the Drake Iowa Caucus Project since 2004. Her work emphasizes institutional design, legislative processes, and political participation.
Awards include the 2014 Arts & Sciences Teacher of the Year and the 2019 Madelyn M. Levitt Mentor Award. She has advised numerous student initiatives, including presidential debate hosting and travel seminars to Washington, D.C., and Denver.
Caufield’s professional roles include prior positions at the Brookings Institution and the American Judicature Society, where she researched judicial selection and election trends. She actively engages students in political campaigns and public discourse, fostering real-world political engagement.
