Dr. Rachel E. Moss is a Senior Lecturer in History at the University of Northampton's Centre for Historical Studies. Previously a Leverhulme Early Career Fellow at the University of Oxford, she specializes in late medieval English history, focusing on the 15th-century gentry and mercantile classes. Her research examines gender (particularly masculinities), family structures, sexuality, and literary culture, with a developing specialization in medievalism within British far-right contexts.
Her research explores three primary domains: 1) Late Medieval English society, 2) Gender and identity construction, and 3) Contemporary medievalism in political movements. She investigates how medieval symbols and narratives are appropriated by extremist groups, analyzing the emotional drivers of radicalization through historical frameworks.
Moss's publications demonstrate consistent thematic focus on medieval gender dynamics and political medievalism. Her recent work examines emotional drivers of online radicalization (2025), pedagogical challenges in teaching medieval history amidst extremist appropriation (2022), and narrative reconstructions of gendered historical experiences (2022).
