Rachel McElroy White is an Assistant Professor of Contemporary History at the University of Groningen’s Faculty of Arts. Her research focuses on the intersection of religion, politics, and human rights in 20th-century Europe, particularly France. She holds a PhD from Yale University (2017), an MPhil from the University of Cambridge (2011), and a BA from Emory University (2010). Prior to her current role, she held postdoctoral fellowships at the Vienna School of International Studies and the IWM, and conducted research at Sciences Po, the University of Glasgow, and Aberystwyth University.
Her primary research project, *Christianity in Conflict: Resistance and Human Rights in France*, examines dissident Christian responses to state authority and colonial policies. A second NWO-funded project, *Photographing Torture: Cultures of Violence and Soldiers as Witnesses during the Algerian War*, analyzes soldier-photographers’ depictions of torture as both evidence and cultural artifacts. Her work appears in *Past & Present*, *Journal of Contemporary History*, and *Contemporary European History*.
White teaches courses on transnational history, historiography, and European cultural history. She coordinates thesis supervision for Euroculture and History MA students and has served as BA thesis coordinator for European Languages & Cultures. Her grants include an NWO Open Competition XS grant (2024-2025).
