Rachel Jones is a Professor of Philosophy at George Mason University, specializing in 19th-20th century continental philosophy, feminist philosophy, and aesthetics. She holds a B.A. from St. John's College, Oxford, and a PhD from the University of Warwick. Her research interrogates intersections of feminist philosophy with queer theory, critical race studies, and decolonial thought. Current work explores Kant's Lisbon earthquake essays to re-examine materiality and difference. She serves on the Executive Committees of the Luce Irigaray Circle and philoSOPHIA, and will be a 2024-25 Residential Faculty Fellow at GMU's Center for Humanities Research.
Teaching focuses on continental philosophy's engagement with art, literature, and ethical questions. Courses include Philosophy After Auschwitz, Feminist Theory Across the Disciplines, and Recent Continental Philosophy. Her scholarship spans over 15 years, with notable works published by Oxford UP, SUNY Press, and Polity Press. Research emphasizes philosophical métissage (cross-cultural synthesis), elemental/sublime theories, and environmental ethics.
Recent presentations include 2024 lectures on 'The Inconstancy of the Earth' at the University of Iceland and 2022's 'Insurgent Care' lecture at GMU. Her 2011 monograph Luce Irigaray: Towards a Sexuate Philosophy remains a foundational text. Office hours Spring 2025: MW 3-4pm in Horizon Hall 6258.
