Professor Rachel A. Burns is an Associate Professor and Tutorial Fellow in Medieval English Literature at the University of Oxford's Faculty of English Language & Literature. Her research focuses on Old English poetry, manuscript design, and the materiality of medieval texts. She is the author of forthcoming monographs including A History of Old English Verse Layout: Poetics on the Page (2024) and A Theology of Things in Early Medieval English Literature (2025). Burns is co-organizing a 2025 conference on the Exeter Book and has contributed to projects like the ERC-funded CLASP initiative, analyzing Old English verse manuscripts. Her work bridges medieval material culture with modern critical frameworks, emphasizing the global and theological dimensions of early medieval literature. Awards include a prize-winning chapter in an edited collection on early medieval ideas of the world.
Her teaching spans Old and Middle English literature, manuscript studies, and medievalism. She edits the Say What I'm Called website addressing terminology in medieval studies. Current projects include studies of the Dialogues of Solomon and Saturn and moral topographies in medieval texts. Burns collaborates internationally, engaging with digitization practices and the material turn in humanities research.
