Dr. Rachael Unicomb is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Health Sciences at the University of Newcastle, specializing in speech pathology. Her work focuses on stuttering, speech sound disorders, and the co-occurrence of these conditions in children. She holds a PhD from the University of Newcastle (2015) and a Bachelor of Speech Pathology (Honours). Dr. Unicomb is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and integrates innovative methods like virtual reality (VR) into teaching and clinical practice.
Her research includes pioneering guidelines for concurrent treatment of stuttering and speech sound disorders, expanding into larger population studies. She collaborates with institutions like the University of Melbourne and Murdoch Children’s Institute on projects such as the Early Language in Victoria Study (ELVS). Clinically, she has experience in early childhood intervention, community health, and private practice, including work with vulnerable families in programs like Newpin.
Dr. Unicomb’s awards include the 2014 Research Higher Degree Publication Prize and the 2011 Australian Postgraduate Award. She has secured over $700,000 in grants for projects on VR education, stuttering prevalence, and interdisciplinary care. Her teaching spans undergraduate and postgraduate courses in speech pathology, emphasizing evidence-based practice and simulation training. She actively supervises honors and PhD students, focusing on topics like stuttering intervention, cultural perceptions, and interprofessional education.
