Rachael James is a Professor of Geochemistry at the School of Ocean and Earth Science, University of Southampton. She specializes in chemical and isotopic techniques for addressing environmental and societal challenges, particularly focusing on carbon dioxide removal via enhanced rock weathering, mineral carbonation, and sub-seafloor storage.

- NERC/BRIDGE Postdoctoral Research Fellow at University of Bristol
- Lecturer in Oceanography at Open University (2000–2008)
- Principal Geochemist at National Oceanography Centre Southampton (2008–2013)
Her current work involves quantifying the effects of basalt fertilization on weathering rates and CO2 drawdown in UK field trials. She serves as Associate Editor for Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta and sits on the Science Advisory Committee of GFZ Potsdam.
