Dr Rachael Ita is a Senior Lecturer in Law at De Montfort University, affiliated with the Leicester De Montfort Law School within the Faculty of Business and Law. She joined DMU in January 2020 and is actively involved in teaching, research, and academic leadership.
Research Interests: Her work centers on international human rights law, with a focus on modern slavery, domestic abuse, and the interpretation of the European Convention on Human Rights. She explores the roles of the margin of appreciation and living instrument doctrines in protecting human rights. She is affiliated with the Institute for Responsible Business and Social Justice and the Centre for Law and Social Justice.
Teaching: She teaches International Human Rights Law, International Law, Land Law, and Immigration and Refugee Law at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. She also leads initiatives on the ethnicity awarding gap in law education.
Recent Research Trends: Her recent publications and conference presentations emphasize the dynamic interpretation of human rights treaties, judicial discretion, and pedagogical challenges in teaching international law to diverse student populations. Her scholarship bridges legal theory, human rights practice, and educational innovation.

Leadership and Service: Rachael serves as the DMU Law Awarding Gap Lead and Faculty of Business and Law Academic Practice Officer. She is an External Examiner at the University of Chichester (from September 2024). She also supervises PhD students working on human rights and justice systems in Nigeria.
External Engagement: She is a Trustee of Assemblies of God (GB) and a Director at New Life Church, reflecting her commitment to faith-based community service.
