R. Richard Grinker is a Professor of Anthropology and International Affairs at George Washington University (GW), where he also serves as Director of the Institute for Ethnographic Research and Editor-in-Chief of Anthropological Quarterly. He holds a Ph.D. in Anthropology from Harvard University (1989), along with M.A. and B.A. degrees from Harvard and Grinnell College, respectively. His research focuses on psychological anthropology, disability, and autism, with regional expertise in Africa and Korea. Grinker’s work explores cultural influences on the identification and treatment of autism, including groundbreaking studies in South Korea, the U.S., Mexico, and South Africa. He is also investigating military psychiatry and authored a biography of anthropologist Colin M. Turnbull.
His teaching spans courses such as Autism across Cultures, Psychological Anthropology, and Cultures of Africa. Current projects include examining autism epidemiology among Korean-Americans and Zulu-speaking South Africans, as well as a forthcoming book on military psychiatry. Grinker’s interdisciplinary approach integrates ethnography, policy analysis, and global health perspectives to address stigma and promote inclusive practices.
His research has been funded by organizations like Autism Speaks, and he collaborates with international teams to advance culturally responsive care for neurodiverse populations. Grinker advocates for rethinking societal attitudes toward mental health and disability through anthropological frameworks, emphasizing the social construction of stigma and the importance of cultural context in diagnosis and treatment.
