Se Kwang Hwang is an Assistant Professor at Northumbria University’s School of Social Work, Education & Community Wellbeing. Their research focuses on disability policy, social work practices, and community support systems, with a particular interest in South Korea and the UK. Hwang holds a PhD in Social Anthropology (2009) and an MA in Social Work (2003).
Research interests include disability rights, institutional reform, caregiving dynamics, and participatory action research methodologies. Their work critically examines welfare systems, employment equity for disabled individuals, and the intersection of cultural norms with disability advocacy.
Recent publications address topics such as ableist welfare systems, autistic parenting experiences, and the challenges faced by disabled teachers’ unions in South Korea. Hwang has received awards including the 2010 Selected Reading for International Autism Awareness Day and the 2008 Best Postgraduate Student of the Year.

- Co-Investigator on the project Perceptions of vulnerability of clinical populations involved in biomedical research (2025–2025).
Collaborations span international teams addressing disability policy and participatory research ethics. Hwang’s work emphasizes grassroots advocacy and systemic policy change to enhance disabled individuals’ autonomy and inclusion.
