R. Reid Hanson is a tenured Professor of Equine Sports Medicine and Surgery in the Department of Clinical Sciences at Auburn University's College of Veterinary Medicine, based at the JT Vaughn Large Animal Teaching Hospital. He has held this position since joining Auburn's surgical faculty in 1992, following an established career in equine medicine.
Dr. Hanson's educational foundation includes a DVM (1983) and BSA in Biology and Animal Science (1980), both from the University of Georgia. His professional development involved a large animal internship at Cornell University (1984), an equine surgery residency at the University of Florida (1987), and academic appointments as Clinical Instructor at Florida and Assistant Professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (1987-1990), followed by two years in private equine practice in Charlottesville, Virginia.
His research concentrates on advancing arthroscopic techniques for musculoskeletal repair in equine athletes, with significant contributions to lameness diagnostics and equine critical care. Dr. Hanson has authored over 500 scientific publications and presented his work internationally across England, Italy, the Netherlands, Canada, and Mexico, establishing him as a leading authority in equine surgical innovation.
Professional recognition includes dual board certification:

At Auburn, Dr. Hanson maintains a tripartite role: providing clinical services to equine clients, conducting research on surgical techniques, and delivering didactic instruction to veterinary students across all four academic years. His mentorship extends to shaping the next generation of equine surgeons through hands-on training in the teaching hospital environment.
Outside academia, he maintains personal fitness through swimming and athletic training, reflecting his commitment to physical performance principles applicable to both human and equine athletes.
