Marco Lopes is an Associate Professor in Equine Surgery at Charles Sturt University, specializing in large animal surgery, lameness analysis, emergency medicine, and gastrointestinal physiology. He holds advanced veterinary qualifications including a PhD in Veterinary Clinical Sciences and board certification from the American College of Veterinary Surgeons. His research focuses on enteral fluid therapy advancements, lameness detection via inertial sensors (e.g., Lameness Locator®), and surgical innovations like standing flank laparotomy for colic. He has extensive international experience across military, industry, and academic roles in Brazil, the USA, Australia, South Africa, and New Zealand. Teaching focuses include surgical techniques, emergency care, and anatomical studies. Key achievements include developing enteral fluid therapies and contributing to objective lameness assessment tools. Current projects explore ergonomic handling of horses and novel approaches to synovial cavity debridement.
