R. James Whipple is an Artist Lecturer in Music Theory at Carnegie Mellon University's School of Music. He serves as Artistic Director and Bassoonist of the Renaissance City Winds, a chamber ensemble he co-founded in 1975. His roles include coordinating the chamber music program, teaching counterpoint, harmony, and composition studios, and mentoring student composers. Whipple is a composer, bassoonist, and advocate for interdisciplinary collaborations, having created works for modern dance, mime theater, and poetry with Samuel Hazo. His compositions span orchestral, chamber, and educational ensembles, with recordings on labels like MMC and Centaur.
Before transitioning to full-time music in 1975, Whipple earned a physics degree and authored a technical paper while working at the U.S. Naval Air Development Center. His academic interests include counterpoint, American music history, and wind chamber literature. He has served on arts funding panels for the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts and presented at conferences on ensemble organization and programming. Whipple also maintains a busy performance schedule with early music groups like Bach and the Baroque and Chatham Baroque.
His teaching extends to Carlow University, Slippery Rock University, and the Chamber Music Conference of the East. He actively supports non-music majors in his classes, emphasizing accessibility and creativity.
