Qianru (Cheryl) Qi is an Associate Professor of Finance at the Telfer School of Business, University of Ottawa. She holds a PhD in Financial Economics from Purdue University, an MS in Applied Mathematics from the University of Kaiserslautern, and a BS in Management Science from Beijing Normal University. Prior to her current role, she has taught and conducted research at NYU’s Stern School of Business, Duke University’s Pratt School of Engineering, and Fudan University. She has also served as a consultant for Morgan Stanley and Citigroup.
Her research focuses on financial technology (FinTech), AI-driven decision-making, risk management, and regulatory compliance. She examines how technology addresses inefficiencies in banking, healthcare, and education sectors. Notable areas include synthetic data solutions for labor market equality, detecting criminal activity in decentralized finance, and AI-assisted experiential learning for skill development.
Recent publications analyze merger waves using supply network data, generative AI’s labor impact, cryptocurrency market dynamics, and CEO succession planning’s shareholder value implications. Her work has been funded by SSHRC, NSF, and Chinese National Science Foundation grants totaling over $300,000 since 2018, including projects on cybersecurity in the private sector, FinTech case studies, and portfolio management education.
Qi leads research initiatives such as the MITACS-funded Private NLP for enterprise data and the SSHRC-backed Synthetic Data Solutions for Labor Market Equality. Her pedagogical contributions include the FinTech Explorer courseware funded by the University of Ottawa Library.
