Dr. Qiang (Chong) Zhang is a Professor in the Department of Biosystems Engineering at the University of Manitoba, affiliated with the Price Faculty of Engineering and Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences. He holds a PhD in Agricultural Engineering from Penn State University and has over three decades of academic experience, including roles as Department Head and Acting Associate Dean (Research). His research focuses on agricultural structures, controlled environments for plant and animal production, odour management in livestock facilities, and numerical modeling of bulk solids systems.
Education:
- PhD, Agricultural Engineering, The Pennsylvania State University (1987)
- MS, Agricultural Engineering, The Pennsylvania State University (1985)
- BS, Mechanical Engineering, Hefei University of Technology (1982)
Research Interests: Dr. Zhang’s work spans odour dispersion modeling, granular material mechanics, greenhouse engineering in northern climates, and smart agricultural systems. He leads projects on airborne disease transmission in livestock, bioaerosol detection, and sustainable grain storage solutions.
Recent Articles: His recent publications address airborne viral transmission, grain segregation in silos, and sensor-based monitoring of bulk storage systems. These studies emphasize interdisciplinary approaches to agricultural engineering challenges.
Grants & Projects: Current projects include odour setback guidelines for Manitoba, design of mobile mass euthanasia systems, and electrostatic air quality systems to mitigate pathogen spread.
Labs/Teams: Research is conducted through collaborations with industry and government agencies, focusing on practical solutions for livestock environmental control and sustainable storage systems.
