Qian Zhang is a Researcher at the Department of Human Geography at Stockholm University. Her work bridges migration studies, digital geography, and environmental governance, with particular focus on China and Sweden. She actively contributes to both teaching and research, supervising bachelor and master's theses while leading significant research projects.
Dr. Zhang's research interests span migration, digital geography, rural and agricultural geography, environmental governance, political ecology, drylands, and pastoralism. Her work often examines the intersection of digital technologies with rural spaces and migration experiences, challenging urban-centric perspectives in digital studies. She employs mixed and qualitative methods to explore how digital platforms transform rural economies and how migration intermediaries shape labor mobility.
Her recent publications demonstrate consistent focus on digital rural spaces, migration dynamics, and environmental governance. The trend shows increasing integration of digital geography with traditional human geography concerns, particularly examining how platform economies reshape rural-urban relations and migration experiences. Her work frequently adopts intersectional perspectives to understand power dynamics in digital labor and environmental governance.

Dr. Zhang supervises bachelor and master's theses in geography, particularly in the 'Globalisation, Environment and Social Change' program. She leads the 'Digital Nature' project (2023-2025), financed by VR's Social Consequences of Digitalization program, examining social-technical relations in Sweden's rural agriculture and wild harvesting industries. She has also participated in multiple Formas-funded projects on migration and the gig economy, demonstrating strong grant acquisition capabilities across Swedish research councils.
Dr. Zhang co-organized the 'Green Transitions on Nordic Farms' conference with international collaborators, indicating active engagement with research networks focused on climate change and agricultural practices. Her involvement with the Post-COST Drylands Action Forum and various professional networks shows commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration on dryland studies and migration research.
