Erik Jönsson is a Senior Lecturer/Associate Professor at the Department of Human Geography, Uppsala University, Faculty of Social Sciences. His research focuses on the intersection of political ecology, political geography, and landscape geography, with particular attention to urban spaces, labor movements, and environmental history.
Dr. Jönsson's research interests span political ecology, political geography, and landscape geography. He investigates how urban spaces are produced and contested, with a particular focus on the labor movement's role in shaping landscapes. His work on Norra Sorgenfri in Malmö examines urban redevelopment, while his research on the People's Parks explores the historical relationship between workers' movements and public space. He has also conducted significant research on cellular agriculture and its implications for food systems, particularly examining the 'present futures' of cultured meat technology.
His recent publications reveal a strong focus on urban landscapes, particularly in Swedish contexts. Jönsson examines how urban spaces like Norra Sorgenfri in Malmö are transformed through planning processes, power dynamics, and community action. His extensive work on the People's Parks movement traces how workers' movements have historically shaped public spaces in Sweden across more than a century. His research demonstrates a consistent interest in the political dimensions of landscape production and the relationship between space, power, and social movements, with particular attention to how marginalized groups claim and reshape urban environments.

Dr. Jönsson has established a significant research profile through collaborations with scholars including Johan Pries and Don Mitchell. His work has been published in leading geography journals such as Geografiska Annaler, Environment and Planning D, and Political Geography, and he has contributed to important edited volumes including 'Socio-Spatial Theory in Nordic Geography' and 'Politisk ekologi.' His research bridges theoretical geographical debates with concrete empirical studies of urban transformation in Sweden.
