Lowe Börjeson is a Professor at the Department of Human Geography at Stockholm University, where they conduct research on society-nature relations, rural landscapes, and environmental change with a focus on African agricultural contexts. Their work spans multiple disciplines including geography, environmental studies, and political ecology, with fieldwork conducted in Botswana, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Kenya, Niger, and Burkina Faso since the late 1990s.
Professor Börjeson's research interests center on geographies of labor, rural development, and environmental transformations, particularly examining how farmers interact with ecological systems across different landscapes. Their work explores the complex relationships between labor processes, ecological conditions, and social structures, with recent projects focusing on farm work in Sweden in the context of sustainability transitions, and water use, quality, and biodiversity across landscapes. They employ interdisciplinary approaches combining historical analysis, field observations, interviews, and remote sensing techniques to understand long-term landscape changes and their implications for rural livelihoods.
Through their extensive publication record spanning over two decades, Börjeson has made significant contributions to understanding agricultural intensification, land use change, ecosystem services, and environmental justice. Their research reveals patterns of how rural communities adapt to changing ecological conditions while navigating complex social and political landscapes, particularly in African contexts where historical legacies continue to shape contemporary land use practices.
Professor Börjeson has secured research funding from major Swedish research councils including Formas, VR, and Forte, and has participated in numerous international research projects such as those funded by the EU, Belmont Forum, and NORFACE Joint Research Programme. They served as a visiting scholar at the University of California, Santa Cruz during the 2019-2020 academic year.
In addition to their research, Börjeson has supervised seven PhD projects to completion (five as main supervisor) and currently supervises one PhD student. They are the founder and editor-in-chief of the journal Rural Landscapes: Society, Environment, History, published by Stockholm University Press, which serves as an important platform for interdisciplinary research on rural landscapes globally.
