Purushotham Tukkaraja

Dr. Purushotham Tukkaraja serves as a Professor in the Mining Engineering and Management Department at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology (SD Mines), where he previously joined after working as a Post-Doctoral Research Associate at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. He currently holds leadership roles including President of the Black Hills Chapter of the International Society of Explosives Engineers (ISEE) and serves as Associate Editor for SME's Mining Engineering journal and Mine Water and the Environment Journal.

His educational qualifications include a B.Tech from Kakatiya University, M.Tech from Indian Institute of Technology (BHU), and Ph.D. from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur.

Dr. Tukkaraja's research focuses on subsurface ventilation systems, computational fluid dynamics applications in mine environments, and climate modeling for underground facilities. His work addresses critical safety challenges through numerical methods and ventilation design for block caving mines.

He has received the Banaras Hindu University Institute of Technology Gold Medal and secured significant research funding from CDC-NIOSH for gas emissions modeling, MSHA, Shale Research Initiative, and South Dakota Board of Regents grants.

As an educator, he teaches undergraduate courses including Mine Ventilation, Underground Mining Methods, and Rock Mechanics, plus graduate courses in Advanced Mine Ventilation and Geostatistics. His professional service encompasses ABET program evaluation, MSHA-approved instruction, and technical session chairmanship at international conferences.
