Pratima Sambajee is a Senior Lecturer in International Management at the Department of Work, Employment and Organisation, Strathclyde Business School, University of Strathclyde. Her academic work spans teaching and research with a strong international focus, particularly on labour, migration, and development in the Global South.
Education:
- PhD in Culture, University of Sunderland (2011)
- MSc, University of Bedfordshire (2004)
- BSS, University of Mauritius (2002)
Her research interests lie at the intersection of cross-cultural management, labour migration, capabilities approach, health and wellbeing, and climate change impacts on work. She investigates work dynamics in sub-Saharan Africa, India, Brazil, and Southeast and Central Asia, emphasizing social justice, dignity, and rights. She applies theoretical lenses such as the capabilities approach and moral economy to understand worker experiences and institutional responses.
The recent publications reflect a strong trend in examining informal economies, resistance, and policy impacts in postcolonial and developing contexts. Her work frequently engages with themes of precarious work, migrant labour, and climate vulnerability, especially in small island developing states like Mauritius. She contributes to both theoretical and policy-relevant knowledge, often collaborating with NGOs, trade unions, and international bodies.
Scientific Awards:
- From informal to small and medium enterprise sector: an analysis of management practices employed by SMEs in Mauritius (2014)
Dr. Sambajee is actively involved in research leadership and supervision. She serves as Principal Investigator and Co-investigator on multiple projects funded by internal and international grants, including studies on decent work under climate change, workers’ rights in Mauritius, and migrant integration. She supervises postgraduate students and welcomes research collaboration. She also contributes to academic service through conference participation, peer review, and committee membership.
She is involved in research networks and projects addressing social exclusion, smart citizen engagement, and informal tourism entrepreneurship, often in collaboration with scholars like Thomas Baum and Maryline Kiptoo. Her work aligns with several UN Sustainable Development Goals, including decent work, reduced inequalities, and climate action.
