Popi Iacovou serves as Assistant Professor in the Department of Architecture at the University of Cyprus, with prior teaching appointments at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, University of Cambridge, Neapolis University, and the University of Nicosia. Her interdisciplinary research bridges architectural theory and design practice through critical engagement with performance studies and time-based media.
Her educational foundation includes a PhD from the Bartlett School of Architecture (supported by A.G. Leventis Foundation and FfWG scholarships), postgraduate studies in 'Architecture and the Moving Image' at the University of Cambridge (Cambridge Commonwealth Trust scholarship), and a Diploma in Architecture from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.
Iacovou's research investigates spatiotemporal phenomena through the lens of theatricality and everyday events, examining how moving image methodologies enable critical analysis of space across scales. Her work establishes Architecture and Performance as a vital framework for understanding spatial experience, temporality, and social production of place, with significant contributions to design research via filmic practice and digital media experiments.
Recent publications reveal a clear trajectory toward immersive digital heritage reconstruction and mediated architectural narratives, particularly evident in her 2024 works on digital surrogates for difficult modernist heritage and exhibition curation as narrative staging. This evolution demonstrates increasing integration of virtual technologies with architectural theory while maintaining core focus on spatial experience.
Her teaching expertise spans architectural pedagogy, notably documented in the 2021 edited volume on first-year design education, reflecting commitment to innovative curriculum development across international institutions.
