Pirjo Markkola is a Professor of History at Tampere University, Faculty of Social Sciences. She previously held professorships at Åbo Akademi University (Nordic History, 2006–2015) and University of Jyväskylä (Finnish History, 2009–2015). Since 2022, she serves as Director of the Academy of Finland Centre of Excellence in the History of Experiences (HEX), following leadership roles in HEX (2018–21) and other Centres of Excellence.

Research Interests include:
- Gender history and labor history
- Evolution of Nordic welfare states and social work
- Lutheranism’s role in welfare institutions
- Historical experiences of child welfare systems
- International networks in women’s history and child abuse inquiries
Publications highlight comparative analyses of Nordic gender policies, lived religion in social practices, and critical historical inquiries into child welfare failures. Her work bridges broad welfare state theories with micro-level institutional experiences.
