Piotr Blumczynski is a Professor at Queen’s University Belfast, affiliated with the School of Arts, English and Languages and Modern Languages Department. He also collaborates with the Senator George J Mitchell Institute for Global Peace, Security and Justice. His research focuses on translation theory and practice, challenging traditional views of meaning loss in translation and exploring its role in epistemology, ethics, and cultural diversity. He co-directs the MISTE project (Multilingual Island: Sites of Translation and Encounter), funded by the Higher Education Authority in Ireland, studying multilingual practices and cultural integration.
Blumczynski’s work spans translation studies, linguistics, and religious texts. He has published extensively, including books like Ubiquitous Translation (2016) and Experiencing Translationality (2023). His research also addresses public health through multilingual perspectives, as seen in The Languages of COVID-19 (2022). He has supervised 19 PhD students and contributed to teaching modules like Translation and Linguistics, and Public Policy.
Blumczynski is Editor-in-Chief of Translation Studies journal, a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, and a member of the European Society for Translation Studies. His awards include the Discretionary Award for Exceptional Performance (2012, 2014). He has lectured globally, with significant engagement in China through collaborations at Jilin University and other institutions.
