Pieter Vermaas is an Associate Professor at Delft University of Technology, affiliated with the Values, Technology and Innovation section. He previously obtained his PhD in the philosophy of quantum mechanics from Utrecht University's Institute for History and Foundations of Science. His research focuses on the intersection of design methodology, ethics, and quantum technology.
- Co-founder of the Dual Nature of Technical Artifacts research program (2000-2005)
- Current leader of ethics research for Quantum Delta NL
- Key contributor to the TU Delft Institute for Design for Values (2017 launch)
His research centers on analyzing design methods to understand technological development and validate engineering practices, with a particular emphasis on integrating moral, societal, and legal values into technical design processes. Recently, his work has concentrated on the ethical implications of emerging quantum technologies.
Scientific awards include:
- NWO VIDI fellowship for research on functions and functional decompositions in engineering design (2006-2010)
