Pieter Candry

Pieter Candry serves as an Assistant Professor in Systems and Synthetic Biology at the University of Oklahoma. His research focuses on microbial communities, metagenomics, and microbiome engineering with applications in biomanufacturing and environmental systems.

Dr. Candry's research interests center on understanding and engineering microbial communities for various applications. His work spans synthetic biology approaches to design microbial consortia, metagenomic analysis of environmental samples, and systems biology modeling of microbial metabolism. He investigates carbon cycling in soil and wetland ecosystems, with particular focus on methanogenesis and Clostridium species for industrial applications.

His recent publications demonstrate expertise in metagenomic analysis, microbial community modeling, and synthetic biology applications. The research shows a strong trend toward integrating computational modeling with experimental approaches to understand and engineer microbial communities for biomanufacturing from waste biomass and environmental applications.

Dr. Candry actively supervises multiple PhD students and serves as Co-promotor for several doctoral projects focused on synthetic microbial communities, bioprocessing, and biosensor development. His projects include evolutionary engineering of microbial communities, rational design approaches, spatial organization of microbial systems, and whole-cell biosensor development.

His laboratory work involves wetland soil incubation studies, microbe-cellulose hydrogel systems, and synthetic microbial community engineering. The research integrates metaproteomics, metagenomics, and stoichiometric modeling to understand microbial responses to environmental changes and to design improved biomanufacturing processes.
