Piet Van Eeuwijk is a Senior Lecturer and researcher at the University of Basel's Department of Social Sciences and the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute (Swiss TPH). He holds a Dr. Phil. I in Social Anthropology (1997) and Lic. Phil. I in History (1985) from the University of Basel, and a postgraduate degree in Development Policy from ETH Zurich (1988). His post-doctoral work includes fellowships at the University of Queensland and Leiden University.
His research spans medical anthropology, ageing studies, urban health, and political ecology, with fieldwork in Tanzania, Indonesia, Ghana, and Laos. Key focus areas include:
- Ageing vulnerability and care dynamics
- Non-communicable diseases in urban settings
- Neglected tropical diseases
- Medical history of Southeast Asia and Africa
Recent publications (2024-2025) explore pharmacovigilance systems in low-income countries and community-based elder care in Indonesia, reflecting his interdisciplinary approach to global health challenges.
He coordinates international research projects on ageing and health, including studies in Tanzania (2008-2014) and Indonesia (2014-2017), and contributes to development policy through organizations like Bread for All.
