Dr Piers Taylor serves as Professor of Knowledge Exchange in Architecture at the University of the West of England, leading the Architecture Research Group. He is an internationally acclaimed architect and educator, founder of Invisible Studio, and a thought leader in experimental architecture that bridges research, education, and practice through participatory making and social engagement.
His academic background includes a Bachelor of Design, Master of Architecture, and PhD funded by an Anniversary Scholarship, which examined empowerment through making in architecture.
Taylor's research interrogates architecture as a social, material, and relational process, emphasizing participatory making and civic agency. He challenges conventional design-construction separations, reframing uncertainty as a catalyst for collective agency. His work explores how material practices and co-design can enable social transformation, particularly through projects involving marginalized communities.
Key recognition includes:
- RIBA National Award for the Wolfson Tree Management Centre
As an educator, Taylor pioneered the Design + Make programme at the Architectural Association and convenes the Studio in the Woods workshop. He mentors across disciplines and develops collaborative research bids, fostering an inclusive research culture at UWE.
Invisible Studio functions as a research laboratory, with Taylor's self-built woodland studio serving as a living test site for alternative production models and community-engaged design.
