Pierre Koning is a Full Professor of Economics at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, specializing in the Economics of Social Insurance and the Labor Market. He is affiliated with HERA (Health Economics Research Amsterdam), IZA, and the Tinbergen Institute. His research focuses on health and work, welfare-to-work services, and public economics. Prior to academia, he served as Chief Science Officer at the Ministry of Social Affairs and Employment (until 2015) and as a policy economist at CPB Netherlands Bureau of Economic Policy Analysis. He holds a PhD from VU Amsterdam, with a thesis on job search models for the labor market. His chair is partially sponsored by Instituut Gak.
His research interests include labor economics, public sector performance, and disability insurance policies. He teaches courses such as Economics of the Welfare State (MSc) and Human Capital (BSc). Recent projects include the GAK project on social security and mental health changes, and an NWO-funded study on the effects of disability insurance reforms. He has advised government bodies like UWV and contributed to media commentary on labor market policies, disability benefits, and early retirement.
His 193+ publications span disability insurance, public policy, and labor market dynamics. Notable works include analyses of disability enrollment trends in the Netherlands and the impact of stricter screening on insurance applications. Collaborations with international researchers and institutions underscore his global influence in health and labor economics.
