Pierre Bruhns is a Professor and Head of the Unit of Antibodies in Therapy and Pathology (INSERM UMR 1222) within the Department of Immunology at the Institut Pasteur in Paris, France. His research integrates fundamental, clinical, and industry-oriented approaches to understand the role of antibodies, Fc receptors, and the complement system in allergy, autoimmunity, and immunotherapy.
His research interests center on the pathogenic and protective roles of human antibodies in diseases such as severe allergy, autoimmune disorders (including immune thrombocytopenic purpura and perioperative anaphylaxis), and infectious diseases. He employs humanized mouse models, droplet microfluidics for high-throughput plasma cell screening, and clinical studies (e.g., AUTOIMMUNI-B, NASA, WaspPenIP, ENDOPHEN) to investigate antibody effector functions, B cell responses post-vaccination (notably SARS-CoV-2), and to develop novel antibody-based therapies for allergic and autoimmune conditions.
The recent trends in his publications highlight a strong focus on SARS-CoV-2 immunology, mechanisms of anaphylaxis, asthma prevention via cytokine-targeting vaccines, and the biology of plasma cells. His work increasingly leverages advanced technologies like microfluidics for immune monitoring and therapeutic development.
Pierre Bruhns has supervised numerous PhD students and postdoctoral researchers, contributing significantly to training the next generation of immunologists. He has also secured research funding and leads projects with clinical and translational implications.
He is actively involved in the scientific community, having organized major international conferences such as 'Antibodies as Drugs' (Keystone Symposia, 2022) and 'Antibodies and Complement' (2023), which bring together experts from academia and industry to discuss the latest advances in antibody and complement therapeutics.
