Olivier Schwartz is the Head of the Virus and Immunity Unit at the Department of Virology, Institut Pasteur. His research focuses on cellular and molecular mechanisms of viral infections, particularly HIV, SARS-CoV-2, and Zika virus. Key areas include viral replication, immune interactions, and cell fusion processes. He leads projects investigating HIV reservoirs, antibody-based therapies, SARS-CoV-2 pathogenesis, and placental development abnormalities linked to interferon-induced proteins.
His work combines virology, immunology, and cell biology to address global health threats like emerging viruses and pregnancy complications. Collaborations include studies on antiviral strategies, vaccine evaluation, and clinical trials. Schwartz has trained numerous students and postdocs, contributing to over 325 publications.
Research highlights include defining mechanisms of HIV cell-to-cell spread, SARS-CoV-2 syncytia formation, and IFITM proteins' role in placental defects. Ongoing projects explore organ-on-chip models for vaccine testing and antibody effector functions.
