Philomena Essed is a Professor of Critical Race, Gender, and Leadership Studies at Antioch University’s Graduate School of Leadership and Change, with affiliations as an affiliated researcher at Utrecht University’s Graduate Gender Program. Holding a PhD in Leadership and Change from Antioch University and cum laude degrees from the University of Amsterdam, her work bridges national, cultural, and disciplinary boundaries.

Essed pioneered foundational concepts such as everyday racism, gendered racism, cultural cloning, and entitlement racism. Her research spans social justice interventions, ethics of care, and dignity in leadership, influencing global discourse in the US, Canada, South Africa, Sweden, Finland, Germany, France, Russia, the UK, Switzerland, Australia, and beyond. She has lectured internationally and authored transformative works like Everyday Racism and Understanding Everyday Racism.
Her recent articles focus on entitlement racism, academic racism, and ethics of care, reflecting interdisciplinary approaches to dehumanization, social justice, and intersectionality. Awards include the 2025 KNAW Academic Medal, Honorary Doctorates from Umeå University (2015) and the University of Pretoria (2011), and a Knighthood (2011) for her contributions to social justice.
