Phillip Nichols is an Associate Professor at the UWA School of Agriculture and Environment and the Institute of Agriculture. His research focuses on breeding, genetics, and agronomy of pasture legumes, with a particular emphasis on applying discoveries in plant physiology, pathology, and molecular biology to benefit farmers. He has bred 22 pasture legume cultivars, including subterranean clovers, lucernes, and Neptune messina. Current projects include a joint venture with PGG Wrightson Seeds for annual pasture legume breeding and AgriFuture Australia-funded seed harvesting improvements. He previously worked at the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (1986–2019) and the NSW Department of Primary Industries (1984–1986).
Education: PhD in Pasture Breeding, Genetics, and Ecology from the University of Western Australia (1994–2004).
Research interests include waterlogging tolerance in legumes, seed harvesting technologies, and sustainable pasture management. His work aligns with UN SDGs related to sustainable agriculture and climate action. Notable research outputs address seed harvesting innovations, waterlogging stress responses, and legume genetic diversity. He leads multiple grants and collaborates on projects funded by organizations like Meat & Livestock Australia and AgriFutures Australia.
His projects include developing saline-tolerant pastures and improving subterranean clover seed production methods. He has published extensively on legume genetics, ecology, and applied agricultural practices, with a focus on translating research into practical farming solutions.
