Phillip Lai is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Art at Goldsmiths, University of London, where he has taught since 2001. He holds an MA and BA in Fine Art from Chelsea College of Art & Design and is known for his sculptural practice that interrogates material limits and the transformation of everyday objects.

His research focuses on material instability, casting processes, and the abstract potential of industrial and domestic objects. His work often explores themes of depletion, survival, and the interplay between primal human needs and material culture.
Recent exhibitions include For Caution (Hong Kong, 2023), Water Being Washed Away (Vienna, 2022), and Testament (London, 2022). His practice spans solo and group shows globally, with a focus on sculpture's role in mediating ecological and political dialogues.
