Dr. Phillip Baker is an Australian Research Council Future Fellow and Sydney Horizon Fellow at the Sydney School of Public Health, University of Sydney. His work bridges public health, nutrition science, and political economy to address critical challenges in global food systems. As a member of the Charles Perkins Centre, he contributes to interdisciplinary research on obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and reproductive, maternal and child health.
Dr. Baker's research focuses on understanding global food systems change and its implications for human and planetary health. He examines the global rise of ultra-processed foods in human diets, the political economy of food systems, and the commercial determinants of infant and young child nutrition. His work has significant policy implications, as evidenced by his regular consultations with United Nations agencies, including a multi-country study funded by the World Health Organization on the political economy of infant and young child feeding.
His recent publications reveal a strong focus on corporate influence in food systems, with particular attention to ultra-processed foods and infant nutrition. The research demonstrates how commercial interests shape food environments, dietary patterns, and health outcomes globally. His work employs diverse methodologies including policy analysis, political economy frameworks, and systems thinking to address complex food system challenges.
