Dr. Penny Farrell is a Lecturer in Global Health at the Menzies Centre for Health Policy and Economics within the Sydney School of Public Health, Faculty of Medicine and Health at the University of Sydney. She holds interdisciplinary affiliations with the Sydney Environment Institute, Sydney Institute of Agriculture, and the Charles Perkins Centre. With a PhD in food systems and food security, her career spans global health research across not-for-profit, governmental, and academic sectors, complemented by a decade of veterinary clinical experience.
Her research applies complex systems approaches and public policy theories to develop equitable, sustainable food systems. Key focus areas include:
- Political determinants of food environment policies
- Planetary health intersections with nutrition security
- Implementation science in Pacific Island contexts
- Mixed-methods analysis of food system datasets
Analysis of her 15 most recent publications reveals dominant themes in food environment measurement, policy implementation challenges, and crisis resilience in Pacific food systems. Methodological strengths include scoping reviews, cross-sectional surveys, and case studies examining governance structures. Temporal trends show increased focus on digital food platforms and post-pandemic food security innovations since 2020.
