Philippe Walter is a Research Director at the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) and Director of the Laboratory of Molecular and Structural Archaeology (LAMS - UMR 8220 CNRS-UPMC) at Sorbonne University. A physical chemist and archaeologist specializing in non-destructive analytical methods, Walter has established himself as a leading expert in characterizing ancient materials related to paintings and cosmetic products from Antiquity. He served as Professor at the Collège de France (2013-2014) for the course 'Analytical Chemistry and Art History' within the Liliane Bettencourt Chair in Technological Innovation.
Walter's research program bridges chemistry, physics, and archaeology through:
- Development of non-invasive analytical techniques including MA-XRF and ion beam analysis
- Investigation of historical painting materials and techniques across multiple civilizations
- Characterization of ancient pigments, cosmetics, and other cultural materials
- Application of modern scientific methods to solve archaeological and art historical questions
His work demonstrates how scientific analysis can reveal historical artistic practices while preserving cultural heritage. Recent publications show continued focus on Renaissance paintings, the Bayeux Tapestry, and ancient pigment compositions, reflecting his sustained research productivity. Walter's interdisciplinary approach has made significant contributions to both scientific methodology and our understanding of historical material cultures.
As an educator, Walter has supervised PhD students and delivered influential lectures including his inaugural address at the Collège de France, 'On the artist's palette: physical chemistry in artistic creation.' His leadership of the LAMS laboratory has established it as a center of excellence for cultural heritage science, combining advanced analytical capabilities with deep historical knowledge.
