Professor Michael Lewis is a Visiting Professor at the University of Reading and Head of the Portable Antiquities Scheme (PAS) at the British Museum, responsible for recording archaeological finds by the public in England and Wales. He also co-founded the European Public Finds Recording Network (2016–present). His roles in law enforcement include a five-year tenure as a Special Constable with the Metropolitan Police Art & Antiques Unit (2012–2017), and active membership in the National Police Chief’s Council Heritage & Cultural Property Crime Working Group (2013–present). He advises the All Party Parliamentary Archaeology Group (2003–present) and the Bayeux Museum via the Comité scientifique Tapisserie de Bayeux.
His research focuses on medieval metal small finds, heritage protection, and the Bayeux Tapestry. His PhD centered on the Tapestry, which he co-curated in the British Museum’s 2015–2018 international exhibition Medieval Europe 400–1500. Key publications include Inscribed Hawking Rings (2019) and Finds Identified (2018), alongside studies on the Tapestry’s symbolism and medieval material culture.
His work bridges academia, law enforcement, and public engagement, emphasizing community involvement in archaeology and cultural heritage preservation. Notable contributions include policy advising on heritage crime and collaborative exhibitions that contextualize medieval artifacts within broader historical narratives.
