Philippe Savoini is a University Professor at Sorbonne University's Plasma Physics Laboratory (LPP), UMR7648, with dual appointments at École Polytechnique (Palaiseau campus) and Sorbonne University's Pierre & Marie Curie Campus (Jussieu). He is a core member of the Space Plasmas research team investigating fundamental plasma phenomena in space environments.
His research focuses on collisionless shocks in space plasmas, examining how these structures form highly energetic particles through complex wave-particle interactions rather than collisional effects. Using sophisticated mono- and multi-dimensional numerical simulations that incorporate kinetic effects for electrons and ions, he studies shock wave dynamics across various spatio-temporal scales. Current research includes analysis of pre-shock zones populated by energetic particles reflected by shocks and interactions between coronal mass ejections (CMEs) and Earth's bow shock.
Prof. Savoini maintains laboratory facilities at both major campuses: Office 05 10 04 CM at École Polytechnique in Palaiseau (Tel: 01 69 33 58 49) and Room 514 in Bar 24-24 at the Jussieu campus (Tel: 01 44 27 92 75).
