Philippe Marcoul is a Professor at the University of Alberta's Department of Resource Economics & Environmental Sociology, within the Faculty of Agricultural, Life and Environmental Sciences. His research focuses on Resource Economics, Industrial Organization, Contract Theory, and Development Economics, with particular emphasis on cooperatives, intellectual property, and agribusiness. He has published extensively in leading journals like the Journal of the Association of Environmental and Resource Economists and Journal of Economic Behavior & Organization. Marcoul is also an Associate Editor for the American Journal of Agricultural Economics and has organized departmental seminars since 2017.
His teaching includes courses on Game Theory, Market Risk Management, and Industrial Organization in agricultural and resource sectors. He has received prestigious teaching awards, including the 2016 Best Teacher of the Year and 2018 Teaching Wall of Fame recognition. His current research explores food gifting within kinship networks and the economic implications of rural poverty traps in India.
Marcoul’s academic contributions span theoretical and applied economics, with recent work analyzing patent examiner incentives, pest resistance coordination, and spatial efficiency of GM crops. He actively referees for top journals and maintains a robust academic calendar with upcoming courses in 2025-2026.
